Israel: Iran is gravest security threat

JERUSALEM, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The head of Israel's security force says Iran poses the gravest nuclear threat to Israel the country has ever faced, Ha'aretz reported Monday.

Appearing before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for the first time since assuming his post, Mossad chief Meir Dagan said Iran was close to the "point of no return" in developing nuclear arms.

Dagan also cited as threats to Israel Tehran's support for terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah, as well as the missiles militants have deployed in southern Lebanon.

He said 1.25 million Israelis in the north of the country were within range of the missiles.

Palestinian sources said Monday Dagan met earlier with Egypt's intelligence chief, General Omar Suleiman.

Suleiman then reportedly held talks in Ramallah with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, pressing the case for Palestinian factions to declare a cease-fire
