LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Gritty rapper 50 Cent was a double award winner Sunday night during the 31st annual American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

After winning for Favorite Rap Album with "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'," the rapper later took home Favorite Male Rap/Hip-hop Artist as well.

In a surprising upset, Kid Rock beat out Justin Timberlake, Clay Aiken and John Mayer for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist.

Jennifer Lopez was named Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist while Toby Keith won his first AMA, taking home Favorite Country Album honors for "Unleashed."

Described as "New York sophistifunk," The Bomb Squad beat out 1,200 other competitors for the Coca Cola New Music Award for the best unsigned band. Sunday night also marked the band's first televised performance.

Nominations were based on record sales while the awards were decided with a survey sent to select record buyers.
