Manhunt for killer of Burbank policeman

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A manhunt continued Sunday for the surviving suspect in a shootout that left one Burbank, Calif., police officer dead, his partner seriously injured.

Police said 19-year-old David Garcia was being sought in a traffic stop that quickly turned into gunfire and launched a dragnet that closed part of Interstate 5 in the Los Angeles suburb for several hours Saturday night.

The two officers had pulled over an SUV on San Fernando Blvd. early Saturday evening and were immediately met with a hail of gunfire from the two occupants. The officers returned fire, killing one suspect. The other, who was identified as Garcia, ran from the scene before police reinforcements arrived.

Both officers were wearing bulletproof vests, but were struck several times. One died in surgery, becoming the first Burbank officer killed in the line of duty since 1961.

The names of the officers were not immediately released.
