Dallas standoff ends with three dead

DALLAS, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Dallas police found two bodies in an apartment Wednesday after killing a gunman who held a woman and children hostage during an nine-hour standoff.

Four police officers were wounded during the siege at an apartment complex in southwest Dallas. None of the officers suffered life-threatening wounds because of bullet-proof vests.

A woman and three children held hostage by the gunman were released unharmed before the final assault by the police tactical unit, according to Sgt. Gil Cerda.

A report of gunfire brought officers to the scene about 3:30 a.m., Cerda said.

The first three officers were shot when the suspect opened fire with a shotgun, he said. The fourth officer was hit near the end of the standoff when officers ended the siege.

The gunman opened fire on tactical officers when they entered the apartment and he was killed by return gunfire, Cerda said. Two other men were found dead nearby.

Police have not determined what sparked the violence.
