Communist leader dies while golfing

BEIJING, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Chinese Communist party has been embarrassed by the death of a leader while at a golf course, the London Telegraph said Wednesday.

Apart from dying at a site that symbolizes capitalism, Li Zhen'e died in Chairman Mao's home town last week, the newspaper said.

Li, party secretary of Changsha in Hunan province, was at the course with two representatives of a local car manufacturer and two Japanese visitors. Late for his next appointment, Li drove off in a golf cart, but the vehicle went out of control and fell 10 feet onto a concrete road, killing him.

The party opened an inquiry but concluded there was no evidence of corruption. It did, however, open many questions concerning the relationship between the party, big business and the sport of the "very wealthy."

"Whatever the truth, public perception of corrupt officials seems to have been reinforced," reported the state news agency Xinhua.
