Friends, family and notables honor Cash

NASHVILLE, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Stars, family and friends gathered in Nashville Monday night to pay tribute to the late Johnny Cash at the same theater where he first found love and glory.

The four-hour event, recorded for presentation this coming Saturday at 8 p.m. EST on Country Music Television, featured stories about Cash and, of course, his music. The Tennessean said emcee Tim Robbins called the Ryman Theater event "a celebration of a remarkable life."

It was the first public memorial since Cash died Sept. 12 at age 71.

Robbins noted several facets of Cash's legacy, which blended country simplicity with the hot-headed fever of rock 'n' roll and the social conscience of folk poetry.

The Ryman was where Cash made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry in 1956 and where he met June.
