Arabs urge revival of peace process

CAIRO, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The 22-member Arab League urged the United States Tuesday to reactivate the stalled Middle East peace process between Israel and the Arabs.

"The situation in the Middle East will remain dangerous until the United States reactivates its role as an honest mediator," Secretary-General Amr Mousa said, stressing, "No such role exists at present."

He made the remarks after talks with U.S. deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who is visiting Cairo.

Mousa said he told Armitage the stalling was fueling anger in the Arab world against the United States, which he said is openly biased in favor of Israel.

On his part, Armitage told journalists the United States will continue supporting Israel because it is at the basis of its Middle East policies.

"That, however, does not mean Washington will support all of Israel's decisions and would refrain from criticizing Israel over its policies of political assassinations and construction of new settlements," Armitage said.
