TOKYO, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Two Japanese political parties that took a beating in the weekend election will merge, Kyodo News reported Monday.
The New Conservative Party, the smallest member of the three-party ruling bloc, announced it will merge with the coalition leader Liberal Democratic Party, the report said.
Prime Minister and LDP leader Junichiro Koizumi proposed the plan Monday, which the NCP accepted, NCP Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai said at a press conference.
The news has limited political impact, as most of the nine NCP lawmakers formerly belonged to the LDP. Four of the nine were re-elected to the House of Representatives and the other five are in the House of Councilors.
The NCP was only able to defend four of the nine seats it held before the lower house election. Among the five losers was party leader Hiroshi Kumagai.
The NCP was established in December last year as the successor of a party with the same English name. Its predecessor was launched in April 2001 as a breakaway of the defunct Liberal Party.
