Guatemala elections headed for runoff

GUATEMALA CITY, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Guatemalan presidential rightist candidate Oscar Berger and rival Alvaro Colom appeared headed for a runoff Monday in Guatemala's presidential election.

Berger was ahead in the initial vote count, according to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

With just over 20 percent of the votes counted, Berger, of the National Alliance party, had garnered 259,147 votes, or 47.64 percent.

Alvaro Colom, of the center-left UNE party, was in second place, with 26.38 percent.

If the trend holds up and none of the 11 hopefuls garner at least 50 percent of the votes cast, a runoff between Berger and Colom would be held Dec. 28.

The candidate for the ruling Guatemalan Republican Front, Efrain Rios Montt, was running third.

The country is electing a new president, vice president, and 150 members of congress.
