BAGHDAD, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- An American soldier was killed in Baghdad as U.S. operations continued in Saddam Hussein's hometown to root out anti-coalition forces.
U.S. military officials said the soldier who was killed Saturday night was part of the 1st Armored Division patrolling central Baghdad. The solider died and another was wounded after their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, the Voice of America reported.
Separately in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, a British soldier was wounded when a bomb planted near a hospital was detonated as a British patrol passed.
In Saddam's hometown of Tikrit north of Baghdad, U.S. military personnel continued to conduct operations to root out anti-coalition militants.
Also Sunday, Iraq's interim foreign minister, Hoshiyar Zebari, said the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council will go into intensive discussions to draw up a road map for the creation of an Iraqi constitution paving the way for general elections.
Meanwhile, it was reported in Kuwait Sunday the emirate is trying to shut down a portion of its border with Iraq to cut down on smuggling and illegal entry.
Kuwait also wants to beef up security ahead of next month's meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Kuwait City.
