Iran wants closer ties to EU, no nukes

TEHRAN, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Hamid Raza Asefi Sunday said his country wants closer relations with the EU and is stopping uranium enrichment.

The statement was combative on its face, accusing Iran's enemies of waging a propaganda campaign to isolate the country, but it contained the elements -- an end to uranium enrichment that could produce bombs and a goal of better relations with the EU -- that seemed to be another signal the confrontation with the rest of the world is fading.

The statement, on the state-controlled IRNA news service, repeated the uranium enrichment detected by international monitors was only to produce fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

But it said the fuel will be non-weapons grade and that the country's policy is now to be transparent enough to put to rest any international suspicions.

"Those who had pinned hope on mobilizing the international community against the Iranion nuclear program," the statement said, "have been disappointed."
