High Court rejects 10 Commandments case

WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court Monday rejected the case of Alabama's chief justice, who wanted to keep a Ten Commandments monument in that state's Judicial Building.

State Chief Justice Roy S. Moore, who was elected to his position, filed a petition asking review of his case. He also filed a petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to order the lower courts to lift an injunction against the 2 1/2-ton monument.

Moore said as head of Alabama's administrative judicial system, he placed the commandments monument in the Rotunda of the Judicial Building in the state capital of Montgomery.

A federal judge ordered it removed, agreeing with challengers who said it violated the separation of church and state. When Moore refused, all of the remaining justices on the state high court ordered the monument removed.
