WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- A poll of 459 registered Alaska voters shows former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, leading GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski in next year's U.S. Senate race.

The poll, which has Knowles leading 52 percent to 43 percent, was conducted by Ivan Moore, a Democrat, for an unidentified corporate client.

The survey found that 53 percent of registered voters had a "very" or "somewhat" positive opinion of Knowles while only 40 percent held Murkowski, who was appointed to her seat, in the same regard.

The survey had a margin of error of 4.6 percent and was conducted between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3.
