Small plane crashes in Long Island Sound

COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A small plane was believed to have gone down in New York's Long Island Sound Sunday and there were no apparent survivors.

The single-engine plane with two people aboard disappeared just south of Fishers Island, Newsday reported.

The Pitt bi-plane used for stunt flying took off from Westerly, R.I., Sunday morning, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said. Officials Sunday night had not identified the two people aboard.

Authorities received reports of the crash from boaters in the Sound as well as from another pilot flying near the doomed plane, Newsday said.

Rescuers found debris in the vicinity south of Fishers Island and east of Valiant Rock, but could not locate the aircraft, Newsday reported.

A Coast Guard spokesman said the search was called off late Sunday afternoon because the severity of the crash and cold water made it unlikely there could be survivors.
