Foreign ministers condemn Iraq attacks

DAMASCUS, Syria, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Ministers from Syria, Turkey, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Kuwait Sunday condemned Iraqi attacks against civilians and humanitarian groups.

The foreign ministers meeting in Damascus, Syria, however, did not comment on attacks against U.S.-led coalition troops, the BBC reported.

The BBC said in their eyes, Iraq is occupied and attacks against foreign invaders were legitimate.

The ministers called for a greater role for the United Nations in Iraq and urged U.S.-led forces to restore security there quickly.

They also rejected American charges that Syria and Iran have been allowing foreign infiltrators into Iraq.

U.S. administrator Paul Bremer told CNN Sunday that al-Qaida members were sneaking into Iraq through Syria. Bremer also said foreign fighters were using passports from Yemen, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Despite their differences, however, the seven ministers pledged to support the interim government in Iraq until an elected government takes over, the BBC said.
