Attorney is in trouble for singing

MONTREAL, Quebec, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A Canadian attorney is in hot water for singing "I Shot the Sheriff" outside the court where his client was on trial for killing a police officer.

Montreal's police union plans to file a complaint with the Quebec Bar Association against lawyer Christian Gauthier, the CBC reported Sunday.

Gauthier sang a couple of lines of the Bob Marley tune Friday, not knowing his voice was being recorded, the CBC said.

When a reporter pointed out audio tapes were still rolling, Gauthier said the song illustrated his client's claim of self-defense.

Georges Painchaud, head of the Montreal Police Brotherhood, said a formal complaint with the Quebec Bar Association will be filed this week.

Gauthier must be formally reprimanded or fined for his actions, Painchaud told the CBC.

His client, by the way, was convicted Saturday and sentenced to an automatic life in prison.
