Emotional testimony heard in sniper trial

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Emotional testimony was heard Thursday during the trial of a man accused in last year's Washington-area sniper attacks, prompting some jurors to openly weep.

The testimony came during the trial of one of the two accused snipers, John Allen Muhammad. The witnesses included a Rockville, Md., police dispatcher who fumbled a call from the sniper last year on the day a 14th victim was shot.

When the caller, allegedly Muhammad, asked to speak with an officer, the dispatcher referred him to detectives in Virginia, where the sniper task force was based. "Do you want the number?" she asked. The caller hung up.

The Washington Post reported four women jurors wept when they heard a husband's hysterical 911 call after his wife was killed and his daughter's anguished and tearful description of her grief when she learned of her mother's slaying.

The case is being heard in Virginia Beach, Va., on a change of venue from Fairfax, Va.

Muhammad's alleged teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, is to go on trial Nov. 10 in Chesapeake, Va.
