British wildcat postal strike spreads

LONDON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Talks are set to resume in the costly, chaotic wildcat British postal strike that has undelivered mail piling up across the country.

As the strike spreads, a huge backlog of mail is mounting in London, while a growing number of other areas including Oxford, Coventry, Kent and Essex are also affected.

The Royal Mail has warned hundreds of post boxes could be sealed by the end of the week if the dispute continues. A temporary shutdown spread as far afield as Scotland Wednesday.

The Royal Mail accuses union activists of prolonging the walkout and has urged national leaders to try to get members back to work. But the Communication Workers Union says managers are intimidating workers over the action, which is costing the company thousands of pounds.

The unofficial action began nearly two weeks ago in west London when workers in Southall walked out over the suspension of a driver.
