HONOLULU, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The last U.S. aircraft carrier to take part in the combat phase of the Iraqi war was only a few days from home on Monday.

The Honolulu Advertiser said the USS Nimitz was due in Pearl Harbor later in the day for a brief stop before the final leg of the voyage home to San Diego.

The Nimitz sailed to the Persian Gulf last spring and flew more than 6,500 missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The 6,000 members of the ship's crew will be getting some shore leave along with sailors from the Nimitz's escort ships and scores of relatives who flew into Honolulu for an early reunion. The Advertiser said merchants in Waikiki were looking forward to an influx of business.
