YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Wednesday attacked the World Trade Organization and accused democratic nations of "terrorizing the world."
Speaking in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Mahathir said, "It would seem that the great exponents and practitioners of democracy believe that the way to spread the doctrine... is by terrorizing the world."
Without naming specific nations, he accused those of retaliating against terrorist acts of hurting the innocent.
The BBC said Mahathir also accused the WTO of being "another instrument to enrich the rich and impoverish the poor."
The 78-year-old leader sparked a recent firestorm when he said "Jews rule the world by proxy."
A frequent critic of Western policies towards developing countries, Mahathir is to step down at the end of the month following 22 years in office.
