OTTAWA, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Members of Canada's federal cabinet Tuesday denied there was ever a plan to send military forces into Quebec had separatist forces won the 1995 referendum.

The issue of Quebec's independence from Canada has long been a subject of debate and referendums.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reporters on Parliament Hill asked several senior cabinet ministers about allegations Prime Minister Jean Chretien was prepared to send in the army to protect federal buildings.

Transport Minister David Collenette, defense minister at the time of the referendum, refused to comment, saying he hadn't read the file.

"It was never discussed in cabinet," said Deputy Prime Minister John Manley, who was industry minister in 1995.

The allegations are contained in a forthcoming biography of Chretien written by Lawrence Martin. The book is titled 'Iron Man: The Defiant Reign of Jean Chretien'.

Chretien, who has been in Thailand for the APEC summit, dismissed the idea outright.
