Separated twins continue to improve

DALLAS, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Doctors in Dallas, Texas, say the condition of the separated conjoined twin continues to improve one week after their 34-hour long surgery.

Dr James Thomas, director of critical care at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, said Mohamed Ibrahim, one of the 2-year-old Egyptian twins, is now breathing without assistance after being taken off his ventilator.

His brother Ahmed may also be taken off the ventilator any time.

Ahmed had temporarily suffered from fits last Friday and has been slower to recover.

The next step in their progress is to be upgraded to guarded from the current critical condition which will occur when they both start breathing without assistance while continuing to improve, doctors say.

"The neurosurgical and medical teams are very pleased with the twins' progress so far," the doctor said.

Hospital staff say the boys are now responding better when they hear the voices of family and staff members.
