Iran agrees to nuclear inspections

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- An official with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency said Iran has agreed to a tougher regimen of nuclear inspections, a newspaper said Thursday.

Mohamed El-Baradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran's national security chief, Hassan Rohani, had told him he would accept inspection visits with no advance notice.

The IAEA has given Iran until Oct. 31 to prove it does not have a nuclear weapons program. If the watchdog is not convinced, it can refer the matter to the U.N. security council, opening the way for the possible imposition of sanctions.

Iran must also hand over all documents relating to the suspected nuclear sites, the London Guardian reported.

Iran insists its nuclear program is purely for the purpose of generating electricity. However, the United States, Britain and other governments claim there is compelling evidence to the contrary.
