Egyptian twins doing 'extremely well'

DALLAS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Doctors are pleased with the progress of the 2-year-old Egyptian twins two days after they were separated during 34 hours of surgery.

Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim are doing "extremely well," according to Dr. James Thomas, director of the pediatric intensive care ward at Children's Medical Center Dallas. He said their vital signs remain stable Tuesday.

The boys are in a drug-induced coma to prevent brain swelling. Thomas said CAT scans were scheduled and if they are good the medication might be reduced Wednesday.

Thomas said infection remains the major threat to the twins who are on three antibiotics. Doctors also continue to watch for brain swelling and hemorrhaging during recovery.

Ahmed and Mohamed were born joined at the crowns of their heads in a remote village about 500 miles south of Cairo. They were flown to Dallas last year for the complex surgery.
