WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys is emerging as the frontrunner in the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Don Nickles.

On Monday, Humphreys, who has not made a formal announcement of his intention, was endorsed for the seat by fellow Republican Jim Inhofe, the state's junior senator.

Inhofe has reportedly agreed to serve as the honorary chairman of Humphreys' senate campaign.

A formal announcement is expected sometime in the next month.
