NAACP confronts hospital in racist episode

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The head of NAACP's Philadelphia chapter met with top officials of an area hospital Monday over a racial incident, KYW News Radio reported.

The incident on Sept. 13 concerns supervisors at the maternity ward of Abington Memorial Hospital who told African-American staffers not to enter a while pregnant woman's room at the request of the father.

NAACP President Donald Clark said he wants consequences for such racist incidents in the future made clear to everyone.

"To assure that this is not a permissive policy, meaning that you can just do it when you feel like it, it is a legally anchored policy and puts the hospital in the position of being legally challenged by the civil rights act of 1964," Clark said.

Clark says the hospital told him those responsible have been disciplined.
