Time running out for Hillary to enter race

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Time is running out for Sen. Hillary Clinton to jump into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, political experts say.

Since Oct. 4, 1991, when her husband, Bill Clinton, officially launched his presidential campaign, the date has emerged as something of a deadline for potential candidates, Democratic Party spokeswoman Deborah DeShong told Fox News on Sunday.

Although Hillary Clinton has regularly and clearly denied an interest in running in the 2004 election, rumors continue to circulate that the New York senator will enter the race.

Since success in a presidential contest depends on grassroots organization and early campaigning, some Democratic contenders have been stumping in New Hampshire and Iowa for over a year.

"Conventional wisdom is sometimes wrong, but we do have a process that favors and indeed has prohibitively favored front-runners who start early, raise money and build organizations in the early states," E.H. Buell, a Denison University professor, told Fox.
