U.S. joins Mexico's mass slaying probe

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A U.S. Congressional delegation was in Mexico Saturday to try and prod officials to solve hundreds of slayings near the border town of Ciudad Juarez.

Many of the women and girls killed over the last 10 years were also victims of sexual crimes, the BBC said Saturday. Most were mutilated and strangled.

Figures available in Mexico put the number of dead at more than 250, but human rights activists say the tally since 1993 is more than 370, the BBC said.

The majority of the victims were impoverished seamstresses who toiled on assembly lines, the BBC said.

Amnesty International has accused Mexican police of negligence and fabricating evidence, the BBC said.

The Congressional delegation plans to meet with relatives of the victims and try to glean more information on crimes. Its members were also expected to meet with Mexican officials and apply pressure on them to do more to stop the killings.
