LAS VEGAS, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Several theories were offered this week as to why a tiger named Montecore critically injured illusionist Roy Horn during a Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy show.
The New York Daily News reported casino owner Steve Wynn said Montecore was distracted by an oversized hairdo on a front-row spectator. And Horn's longtime partner, Siegfried Fischbacher, said the animal was trying to protect Horn.
Wynn said as the big cat and Roy strode onto the stage last Friday at The Mirage, Montecore stopped to check out the big hair.
Wynn told Las Vegas station KLAS-TV: "For whatever reason, Montecore was fascinated and distracted by the guest sitting ringside."
He said the woman, apparently believing it was part of the act, then tried to pet the royal white tiger.
When Roy stepped between them, Wynn said Montecore "gently" sank his teeth into the magician's arm, causing Roy to trip. The tiger then picked up the fallen magician "like a cub" and carried him off stage.
Horn remained in critical but stable condition Friday at a Las Vegas hospital.
