Germany helps Russia dispose of nuke subs

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- German officials Thursday signed a $354 million agreement to help Russia dispose of 120 Soviet-era decommissioned nuclear-powered submarines.

The Novosti news service said the agreement provides assistance to Russia in disposing of related stockpiles of nuclear weapons by dismantling decommissioned nuclear submarines.

Novosti said the six-year deal, signed during a German-Russian summit in the Urals, is part of an initiative aimed at preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Also reportedly signed Thursday was an agreement between Russian Railways and Germany's DB AG Railway Co., promoting cooperation in passenger and cargo transportation.
