Former New Jersey senator faces charges

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Police in Lambertville, N.J., Wednesday announced charges were filed against former Senator Robert G. Torricelli for leaving the scene of an accident.

The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 29, when Torricelli's black Jeep hit a parked, unoccupied car in a supermarket parking lot, then drove off, the New York Times reported.

A witness wrote down the license plate number, which was traced to Torricelli and his former wife, Susan Holloway Torricelli. The couple told police Susan was driving and left because she did not see any damage on the other vehicle. Witnesses, however, told police a man was driving, the Times reported.

The owner of the damaged vehicle told police a lawyer representing Robert Torricelli offered to repair the damage if he would agree not to sue and sign an affidavit stating the former senator was not behind the wheel. The owner declined, police said.

Torricelli was ordered to appear in municipal court on Nov. 20 to answer the charge.
