Ex-Sen.'s son to seek House seat

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Florida Rep. Connie Mack IV says he plans to run for the U.S. House seat once held by his father, former GOP Sen. Connie Mack III.

The younger Mack, a member of the Florida House since 2000, intends to purchase a home in the state's 14th Congressional District, made up of Lee County and parts of Collier and Charlotte counties in the southwestern part of the state.

Mack's father held a similar seat in Congress from 1982 until he was elected to the first of two U.S. Senate terms in 1988.

Rep. Porter Goss, R-Fla., who took over for Mack and still holds the seat, is expected to retire at the end of his current term.

Mack's great-grandfather, the original Connie Mack, was manager of baseball's old Philadelphia Athletics from 1901 until he retired in 1950 at the age of 88 and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
