LA PAZ, Bolivia, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A second week of protests demanding the resignation of Bolivian President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada began in the nation's capitol Tuesday.
Protests against exports of non-industrialized gas began in La Paz Tuesday with a protest march and a strengthening of blockades in the north of the city after fierce battles at the weekend, Granma International reported.
A massive march of local political groups, university students and teachers began Tuesday morning, threatening to paralyze the capital, where police and soldiers have been guarding state buildings since Thursday.
"It's a week of action; the capital's sectors are holding daily demonstrations, bringing La Paz to a standstill for six hours," said Jaime Solares, head of the Bolivian Workers Trade Union, reiterating a call for civil disobedience if the government decrees a state of siege.
During a talk with a group of citizens Sunday night, president Lozada repeated he would not resign, pointing out that police and armed forces "will not allow civil war."
