U.N. Council members decry Israeli attack

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Members of the U.N. Security Council Sunday overwhelmingly condemned Israel's air attack on a reputed terrorist training camp near the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Syria and the Arab League called for the emergency session resulting in an unusual Sunday meeting on the eve of the most holy day on the Jewish Calendar Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement.

Members of The Quartet backing the Middle East road map for peace, Russia and the United States, failed to explicitly condemn the Israeli air strike. The European Union and the United Nations also are Quartet members.

Most council members condemned the attack as aggression and a violation of international law, despite Israel's claim it was in self-defense.

Most of the council members also condemned the suicide bombing in Haifa, Israel, Saturday, which killed 19 people and led to the Israeliair assault.

Syria, which is sponsoring a not-acted upon measure condemning the Jewish state, led off the formal debate followed by Israel. The reamining council members and more than a dozen other nations, most of them Arab states, and the Palestinian Observer spoke.
