General strike called in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Nigeria's trade unions, upset over the recent hike in fuel prices, plan to call an indefinite general strike beginning Thursday.

A BBC report said the strike could impact the eighth all-Africa Games opening in the capital next Saturday. The games are costing Nigeria an estimated $700 million to host.

The strike is planned to protest a government decision to remove subsidies on fuel prices. Prices have risen more than 10 percent since then in a country which is a major oil exporter.

The government says the subsidy money can be used to improve other services and infrastructure.

The Nigerian Labor Congress, which decided to call the strike, also urged Nigerians to stay away from the Africa Games in which some 50 countries are taking part.
