TOKYO, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will seek the release of Myanmar's detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.
Koizumi will ask his counterpart Khin Nyunt in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, to release Kyi when the two meet next week in Bali, Indonesia, the Kyodo News Service reported.
If the request is acknowledged, it would be the first time the Japanese premier has delivered such a message to a Myanmar leader since the pro-democracy Nobel Peace Prize laureate was detained May 30.
Although a formal bilateral meeting has not been arranged, Koizumi will seek to talk with Myanmar government officials at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its dialogue partners.
Suu Kyi and several members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) have been detained since what Japan says was a violent clash between NLD supporters and pro-junta demonstrators May 30 in northern Myanmar.
