Bolivians protest at natural gas exports

LA PAZ, Bolivia, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Protestors, including thousands of teachers, demonstrated for a second day Wednesday in La Pas against the Bolivian government's plan to export natural gas.

The BBC said the South American nation's main union called an indefinite strike Tuesday and on Wednesday teachers took to the streets demanding higher wages and the resignation of President Gonzales Sanchez de Losada.

The protesters are concerned about the export plan since few of the country's privatization decisions have proved beneficial.

But natural gas is not the only problem: The BBC said peasant farmers want better land reform, teachers want more money and coca growers want the government to stop eradicating their crops, which are grown for traditional uses in addition to being used in the production of cocaine.

Bolivia is South America's poorest nation, with about 70 percent of its citizens living in poverty.
