Nova Scotia braces for hurricane Juan

DARTSMOUTH, Nova Scotia, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Hurricane Juan is expected hit Nova Scotia Sunday night with winds of 105 miles per hour, the Canadian Hurricane Center announced.

Forecaster George Parks, at the hurricane center in Dartsmouth, Nova Scotia, said Juan is now a Category 2 hurricane, and should weaken over cold water before it hits land, and then will weaken further through the night.

High wind warnings have been issued for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and eastern New Brunswick. A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for all of mainland Nova Scotia, CTV News reported.

Nova Scotia Power says crews are on standby in case of outages.

The hurricane is expected to weaken and transform into an extratropical storm in the Gulf of St. Lawrence by early Monday.

Juan is the fifth hurricane of the Atlantic season, which began June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.
