AMMAN, Jordan, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Authorities in Jordan have captured 11 men already charged with plotting to attack the U.S. embassy in Amman and other U.S. targets in that Arab country.
The 11 included two who were also wanted in the deadly rioting last November in the southern city of Ma'an which left five dead, CNN reported.
Officials said Mohammed Shalabi, also known as Abu Sayyaf, and Omar Bavayaa were arrested along with nine others in what was described as "a bloodless operation" in Mafraq, northeast of Amman near the border with Syria. They did not say when the men were arrested.
Sayyaf was named as the ringleader of a group of "armed bandits" engaged in smuggling black-market goods to Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Last month, military prosecutors charged the 11 men in absentia. The unexpected arrests in Mafraq came ahead of an October 1 trial date for a suspect accused of the assassination last year of U.S. diplomat Laurence Foley in Amman.
