YANGON, Myanmar, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Myanmar's pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was to be discharged Friday from a hospital, a week after undergoing surgery, the Voice of America reported.

Aung San Suu Kyi will go home to recuperate but during recuperation, she will remain under house arrest, said her personal physician, Tin Myo Win. The hospital is in Yangon, capital of the country formerly known as Burma.

Until her hospitalization, the country's military government had held Aung San Suu Kyi in an undisclosed location since May 30. On that day, pro-government supporters attacked her political convoy in northern Burma. The government says her detention is for her own safety, a claim the international community disputes.

Sending Aung San Suu Kyi home, even under house arrest, is seen by many as a bid by the government to ease pressure from its Asian neighbors, the United States and the European Union.
