BAGHDAD, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The top U.S. military commander in Iraq predicts fighting there is likely to intensify in the future, and possibly continue until the Americans leave.
Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, in an exclusive interview with Knight-Ridder Newspapers, said the "Sunni Triangle" west of Baghdad has been the site of the fiercest attacks on American soldiers in recent months and attacks there are likely to intensify during coming weeks.
Sanchez, however, said he believes the coalition forces are winning the war, and that most of the Iraqi people are behind them.
Said Sanchez: "At this point, I don't think I've got any indication that it is beginning to take hold with the populace. On the contrary, we're getting more and more help from the local population to weed out some of these elements that are disrupting their lives and their neighborhoods."
But Sanchez said he expects the attacks and casualties to continue as long as U.S. troops remain in Iraq.
