Deal could end 4-week Hawaii bus strike

HONOLULU, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Negotiators struck a tentative deal early Thursday that could bring a four-week old bus strike in Hawaii to an end.

The Honolulu Advertiser said an agreement was reached shortly after 2 a.m. between management and employees of Oahu Transit, the bus line that serves Honolulu and its outlying neighborhoods.

More than 1,300 drivers represented by the Teamsters stopped working in late August. They'll vote on the pact this weekend and could be back on the job before next Monday's morning rush hour.

The strike has forced scores of commuters to drive, walk or use other means of getting to their job.

At the same time, Honolulu's city council Wednesday approved a 25-cent fare hike effective next month that will help cover a projected $6.8 million deficit in the bus company's budget.
