WTC memorial sculpture sold on Internet

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A memorial sculpture made out of steel beams of the World Trade Center was sold on eBay for $255, angering family members of the victims.

"What a shame," Lee Ielpi, whose firefighter son, Jonathan, died on Sept. 11, 2001, told the New York Daily News. "It's tasteless that someone would want to profit from a memorial."

It's unclear how the sculpture ended up listed for sale by Cargo Largo, a dealer of items lost or damaged during shipment.

Cargo Largo's president apologized for the sale and offered to donate the proceeds to a victims' fund or to ask the winning bidder to sell the sculpture back, the Daily News reported.

"We're not interested in profiting off someone's misfortune," said Dee Pack, president of the Independence, Mo., company.

Bryan Hunt, a Manhattan sculptor, created the five-inch sculpture with the minimalist design and inscriptions "Recovered Steel World Trade Center" and "September 11, 2001," which were sent free to all relatives who requested one.
