Thai police foil al-Qaida terror plot

BANGKOK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Thai police have reportedly foiled an al-Qaida plot to shoot down an El Al passenger jet with a surface-to-air missile at Bangkok's airport.

Israel's Channel Two television reported Tuesday Bangkok officials arrested a man who was spotted using a video camera near El Al facilities at the airport about three months ago.

During a subsequent search of the man's home, officials found preliminary plans to shoot down an El Al jet either during takeoff or landing.

Ha'aretz news agency said Thai authorities also found plans to attack El Al passengers, either in the Bangkok airport terminal or while they made their way to the plane prior to takeoff.

The arrested, but unidentified, man is reported to be a member of the al-Qaida terror network.

The Jerusalem Post said since the arrest, security at the Bangkok airport has been increased and passenger routines have been changed.
