YANGON, Myanmar, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Former Indonesia, Foreign Minister Ali Alatas was in Myanmar (formerly Burma) Monday, negotiating the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Channelnewsasia.com said Alatas was acting as a special envoy to visit Suu Kyi and Myanmar's military rulers, as well as to press for her release.

The Nobel peace laureate was recovering from a major operation in a Yangon hospital. Her detention since May has drawn international criticism.
