Braun makes presidential run official

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Carol Moseley Braun Monday made her run for the 2004 Democratic nomination official.

Saying she wants to take the "Men Only" sign off the White House door, the former Illinois senator formally announced her candidacy for president at two predominately black colleges, Howard University in Washington and Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.

Braun scheduled a third announcement Monday evening at the University of Illinois at Chicago, her alma mater.

Underfunded and an admitted long shot, Braun made history as first African-American woman senator in 1992. The working-class product of the Chicago Public Schools who earned a law degree at the prestigious University of Chicago said she wants to inspire the next generation of minority and female politicians to aim higher.

"I am fighting for the nomination because I am determined to move our party in the direction of our nation's most noble ideals and live up to our generations duty to leave the next generation no loss freedom, no less opportunity, no less optimism than we inherited from our ancestors," she said.

"I am dedicated to building partnerships for peace, prosperity and progress based on new ideas that are as practical as they are innovative."
