Public smoking ban sought in Europe

LONDON, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Europe could face a ban on public smoking with the passage of controversial legislation now being developed.

David Byrne, the European commissioner for health, wants to impose the ban on all bars, cafes and restaurants in the European Union, the Times of London reported Friday.

He also plans to use employment law in a bid to ban smoking in all work places.

British Health Secretary John Reid opposes the ban as do tobacco companies and restaurant owners who are described as outraged over the idea, claiming it would lead to major job losses.

Ireland is the only European country that has introduced a smoking ban in bars and restaurants. Similar bans are widespread in the United States.
