Isabel's lingering casualties

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Virginia Gov. Mark Warner Friday called Hurricane Isabel "probably the worst storm in a generation," as more than a million residents began conserving water.

Utility officials told the Washington Post it might be a week before electric power is fully restored in the Washington and Virginia areas.

More than 4 million households and businesses in the mid-Atlantic region were without power Friday, including more than 1.2 million around the District of Columbia. Hundreds lined up to buy dry ice, a scene expected to be repeated across the area in coming days.

President Bush already has declared disaster areas in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.

"We are looking at a 100-year storm," Gen. Bruce Tuxill, Commander of the Maryland National Guard, said.
