U.S. warns of chemical attacks

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department has issued a chilling new warning al-Qaida may be plotting chemical or biological attacks on the United States.

"We expect al-Qaida will strive for new attacks that will be more devastating than the Sept. 11 attack, possibly involving non-conventional weapons such as chemical or biological agents," the department wrote in a worldwide terror alert.

The Boston Herald said the list of possible terror attacks included suicide operations, hijackings, bombings or kidnappings.

The alert was the latest grim reminder of the terrorist threat still plaguing the United States two years after some 3,000 people were killed by hijackers who launched suicide airliner attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Given the spate of terror bombings in recent months in such places as Saudi Arabia, Casablanca and Indonesia, the State Department said European or Eurasian locations were possibly on the al-Qaida target list.
