Carjack shootout leaves 1 dead, 2 wounded

CHICAGO, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A bystander was killed and two men were wounded when a carjacking outside a Chicago nightclub turned into a gun battle, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

An off-duty police officer was walking to his white Range Rover parked outside the Voyeur nightclub about 3:30 a.m. when two men approached and demanded the vehicle, police said.

The officer identified himself and a gunfight broke out.

The bystander was struck in the head and fatally wounded. Police spokesman Pat Camden said the victim "apparently was hiding, crouching at the side of the car, trying to get out of the crossfire."

Two weapons and more than 20 shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

Camden said witnesses had seen "multiple offenders, four to six offenders -- we're not sure."

Police were investigating who fired the bullet that killed the man, whose identity wasn't available, the Tribune said.

The two alleged assailants were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they underwent surgery and were listed in serious condition Friday.
